What is Permaculture?

Can we create a Life on Earth which is Harmonious with the laws of Nature and sensitive to our delicate & diverse Ecosystems?

This is the aim of Permaculture, it is a very wide term that offers not only practical and hands-on tools/designs to creating Regenerative systems but it is also a way of thinking that can be applied to not only Land management but also social systems, political systems and even our bodies & minds.

It is the tool that can help us to understand how to live in Harmony with Nature, and in doing so we learn how to get more from less, how to create abundant agricultural, energetic( Clean energy), residential and social systems

Permaculture is not exclusive – its principles and practice can be used by anyone, anywhere:

  • City flats, yards and window boxes
  • Suburban and country houses/garden
  • Allotments and smallholdings
  • Community spaces
  • Farms and estates
  • Countryside and conservation areas
  • Commercial and industrial premises
  • Educational establishments
  • Waste ground

Permaculture encourages us to be resourceful and self-reliant. It is not a dogma or a religion but an ecological design system which helps us find solutions to the many problems facing us – both locally and globally.

Writer Emma Chapman defines it as:

“Permaculture, originally ‘Permanent Agriculture’, is often viewed as a set of gardening techniques, but it has in fact developed into a whole design philosophy and for some people a philosophy for life. Its central theme is the creation of human systems which provide for human needs, but using many natural elements and drawing inspiration from natural ecosystems. Its goals and priorities coincide with what many people see as the core requirements for sustainability.”

Permaculture tackles how to grow food, build houses and create communities, and minimize environmental impact at the same time. Its principles are being constantly developed and refined by people throughout the world in very different climates and cultural circumstances.

Saraya is so happy to be hosting this unique learning experience
with Rico Zook – assisted by Mohnish Lahir and Zora Thind– Learning not just how to ‘know’ but also how to ‘do’ Permaculture!

This one-week workshop is a broad and comprehensive introduction to Permaculture, as well as an introduction to how we learn.

By combining these two, this workshop grounds and prepares the participant to further their own learning and growth in, permaculture and regenerative thinking with all the basic skill set to go out and practice permaculture, and bring it to life in one’s own way.

This is a very hands-on workshop! One designed to equip the self- learner with all the basic skills to design, set up and maintain one’s own permaculture system.

With each afternoon being engaged in multiple projects at Saraya Eco-stay, like:-  Different methods of compost making, soil building, sheet mulching, building garden beds, building Swales, planting seeds, nursery work, and installing and servicing greywater systems are some of the projects we will work on.

In the mornings we will be learning and building the conceptual framework of permaculture and regenerative thinking, which will include all the basic principles and theories of Permaculture and how to understand Design in Permaculture.

This framework allows you to fit in the hands-on projects into a comprehensive and highly function methodology for living on our planet in a positive and mutually beneficial manner. It is
the foundation for creating a healthy and vibrant lifestyle while simultaneously benefiting and healing the natural world that sustains us.

Integrated into our time and work will be an introduction to how we learn. We will set a solid foundation in the understandings of the learning process, as well as how you as an individual learns best.

Our goal is to help you map out your continued learning on a pathway that stretches into the future, a future of your own design.

After such a successful month-long Permaculture Intensive last year!

Christoff Schneider, the Head of the Permaculture School Austria, is back in India to continue Teaching and Sharing his extensive Permaculture experience, understanding and the highly effective hands-on and practical methods that he has gathered over the years of work in this field!

Saraya is so so proud to be hosting another full-length Permaculture Design Certificate Course (PDC) followed by Advanced Design & Hands-on Courses with Christoff Schneider in January / February 2020!

DESIGNING OUR FUTURE’S! – The World needs this Now!

This Permaculture Design Certificate Course (PDC), based on Bill Mollison’s Permaculture Designers’ Manual, gives you the appropriate tools to create a sustainable, resource and cost-effective environment while reducing the ecological footprint and the human impact on mother nature. This course has been refined since it’s inception in the late 1980’s. It will take 80 hours of theory to complete, plus extensive hands-on design experience.

A land management system that consciously and synergistically integrates agriculture and social design principles into the native ecosystem. It offers a practical and creative approach to the problems of diminishing resources and threatened life support systems the world now faces. The core principles of each of these systems are to, Take responsibility, Care for the earth, Care for people & Fair share.

‘The essence of permaculture – the design of an ecologically sound way of living – in our households, gardens, communities and businesses. It is created by cooperating with nature and caring for the earth and its people. Intelligent Design is Key.’
